Sun Xiaoyun

In 1986, Ms. Xiaoyun was awarded First Prize at the National Exhibition of Middle-Aged and Young Calligraphers, in which more than one hundred thousand artists competed. She has won several other calligraphy competitions since her first award, and today serves as a Council Member of the China Calligraphers Association. The following is her preface to the calligraphy folio from which the images on these pages were taken:

Peach Blossom Paradise
by Sun Xiaoyun. Translated by Zhu Youlong

My favorite legendary story is Peach Blossom Paradise, described by the great poet Tao Yuanming. It seems to be such a spellbinding village where only a chosen few of our forefathers had ever lived. We ordinary people can only join the lot with Mr. Liu Ziji, a country folk from Nan Yang, who kept trying to seek in vain the hidden place. Nevertheless, this unfortunate, Mr. Liu, has my deep sympathy. His persistence of purpose, his aspiration for freedom, his unwavering faith and devotion and his long-term pursuit, wandering about woods and hills, all set a good example for us to follow. In my opinion, it's not the achievement that counts, but the process. And it's like the Holy Grail—only to be seen by those who are pure in heart. Let us keep trying. Why couldn't we, like the fortune-favored fisherman, regain the paradise by serendipity?
