Favorite Color
by Laurie Lalish
I would have to say blue, no reason
now at age 51 to waste my time
on second and third favorites.
Five years ago I bought a well-made
green coat and every year since I wear
my mistake, watching blue shadows
beneath the waves of snow, with envy.
(I bought a ring once because the set stone
looked like a piece of the sky
and I've never tired of wearing it.)
I've toyed with low-cut red when
I drank in bars, and every few years,
yellow in spring.
But it's always been blue, ever since
I chose that crayon out of the seven, and imagined
wearing the blue dress of a pioneer girl,
squinting across the endless prairie,
three-quarter sleeve sewn to fit the curve of her arm.
