A Walk on the Wild Side
Photo: A Nanjing girl.
A Nanjing girl.

Joseph Schumpeter called capitalism the "process of creative destruction" as new modes of production destroyed the old and caused enormous social disruption. Today, China exemplifies this process more than any other country.

On a lighter note, I present "Naturally JOJO," a young teenager who wears this message on her shirt. Like millions of other youngsters, she probably has even less understanding of the message than the casual western viewer does. It was her mother who gave permission for the photo, the mother (right) then stepping out of the line of sight.

In the background of this last picture, center, we see a Chinese sign advertising what is called a computer bar—a room filled with two dozen computers giving the public access to the Internet and to a variety of games. The cost is only 2 yuan an hour, about 24 cents. Despite what seems to be the government's meddling, the Chinese can visit the electronic world-at-large, often using such powerful search engines as Google. It is now estimated that 25 million Chinese surf the Internet.
